Biography
Somerville, Massachusett's G. Gordon Gritty writes music that is nonsensical, observation, and challenging. Gritty's been making music since the age of 15 when Gritty distributed self-produced hip hop mixtapes to classmates. Q1 2022 is the first of four quarterly records to come out of the Gritty canon. The gist is Gritty laying down all of the instruments in various professional studios with various professional engineers. The songs range from straight up improvisations, half-baked ideas, and re-interpretations of work that harkens back decades when it was just Gritty alone in a room on Audacity. A music fan first and still not a musician, Gritty wanted to 'dye it blonde' so to speak...following early Memphis heros Jay Reatard or The Barbaras whose earliest stuff was no-fi or shit-fi (labels that Gritty has embraced) but eventually got shined up. This isn't Gritty saying byebye to lo-fi and homerecording; morelike a more costly experiment in amateur musicianship.
Gritty transitioned from strictly hip hop to experimental/DIY punk in 2008. I'M NOT A MUSICIAN (2012) was the tape that started it all. Gritty earned the reputation as an outsider. Like if you locked an accountant who hated art in a room with a kids drum set, a guitar, one microphone, a teeny practice amp and a computer with free recording software. And told them they had to record 33 songs of their unique composition over the course of one year. But Gritty loved music. Like really loved it. Especially exciting rock and roll and weird shit. Big fan. Once Gritty started playing, Gritty realized: DAMN, I CAN'T MAKE A MISTAKE. IT ALL WORKS! A dangerous mindset, but OH has it endured.
These days Gritty is still a fan of music first and foremost. But performing
