What Gritty Remembers: About a year passed and I had the itch to go back to the studio. I hit up Hadden and he recommended The Record Company in Roxbury. This was a one day session. As far as preparation went, I wrote the lyrics down the night before, but this time I wanted to try a totally improvised approach instrumentally. I wanted to wing it basically. I wouldn't recommend this generally (if you are paying for studio time), but I was feeling very confident that something positive would come out of this session. It was about as close to how I used to record at home - coming up with stuff instantly and then layering instruments on top. I believe I started each song with guitar/keyboards and vocals and then layered drums on after. The guitar parts were mostly noise/effects (no chords or melody) and the keyboard functioned as the bass. I think the overall production stands out as another instrument and as such is crucially important. These aren't songs traditionally, but they aren't pure noise either. I wasn't going for hip hop necessarily but Hadden pointed that out and leaned into just how spacey and weird these were. I appreciated that and the craftmanship behind the boards. With the I'm Straight cover, I'm not sure what I was going for but it doesn't feel that out of place on here. I was able to sneak some bass in there and give it a Chilton 'Boogie Shoes'-esque effort.
1. SECONDEE FLOOR
Lyrics: Before the student bus departs We made out for art Let's roll down hills You can do that by yourself, I need to pack For I'm going away for good. Wanna pack? I had not that in mind. Our connection was dial up Comcast is on their way Pretty soon, we'll restart and begin to play In the student center, it's exhibitionism, just for the games Just for the plain view motorboating But in our case the best case was the worse case It's all the same. Past the biological wing, it's a non traditional mating. A feast to endure. It's 10 PM and you can't get caught Unless the cisfemale professor gender bends into a not-so-lonely anymore second floor men's lav.
2. OFF TO THE CUBE
Lyrics: You're off to Madrid I'm off to the Cube You're off for eighteen months I'm off for three days I'll be off to Falafel King I'm off to your ethically nonmonogamous' Princes' Palaces (It's a Kings Place) I'm going to leave for Eataly for the Lemoncello Liquor Legal Seafood sounds much better Maybe absinthe, Maybe no apps Maybe apps, May be no apps, sir
